Today I didn't get down to the court house until
10:30 AM. There was an earlier witness, but I don't
know who it was or what was said. When I arrived
expert police procedure witness VanBlaracom was
just going back on the stand. The plaintiff's attorney
named Jones was questioning him about a list of
newspaper articles mostly regarding Arndt's conduct
as a police officer, and other statements by the BPD
regarding the conduct of other BPD officers working
in some capacity on the Ramsey case.
Naturally "Slick Hagglemax" the defense attorney
was objecting full bore and more often than not
being over ruled by the judge. I was going to try to
keep score but lost track after the first 15 minutes
because Hagglemax insisted on another sidebar
which I believe the federal trial judge dislikes as it
impedes progress in the trial and
inconveniences the jury.
At some point before lunch the plaintiff wanted to
show an abridged video tape of a Boulder city
council meeting. Hagglemax objected of course and
insisted that we watch the entire meeting, not just
the important parts.
So they played the tape. All in all it didn't look that
great for Kolbe because various City Council
members were questioning Kolbe's lack of progress
on many different police issues. His responses to the
city council members actually cracked me up, not
because they were humorous. He went through a
list of various crimes and cases one of which
included a riot. He felt his problems would be abated
if there were a lull in crime in Boulder. That's what
cracked me up. It was like wishing for the "magic
fairy" just after you have run an ice pick through the
evaporator of your refrigerator and hear the gas
leaking out. Subsequently some city council
members questioned him as to whether or not this
was actually realistic.
They also indicated he wasn't doing a good job in
media relations.
After the tape, we recessed for lunch. "Reporter"
from Justice watch invited me to lunch so I finally
did get a "free lunch" and this time the person that
offered it did show up.
After lunch Hagglemax began his cross examination
of VanBlaracom. This is when I changed his name
from "Slick Hagglemax" to Weasel Hagglemax. It so
happened that the judge outside of the view of the
jury had ordered the plaintiff's attorney to draw up a
list of newspaper articles with the date, headline,
and a brief summation of the article so that the jury
would not be exposed to other prejudicial
information and reports about the Ramsey case
which wasn't directly related to Arndt's suit. Well
slime ball Hagglemax went on and on in front of the
jury about how this redacted list was invalid and
should be ignored by the jury even though he knew
full well that it was something the judge had
required. However, the jury didn't know that.
While this apparently is a legal maneuver the judge
allowed, my sensibilities were affected. As the
afternoon wore on Hagglemax droned on and on in
an augmentative tone with the expert witness. I
finally couldn't stand it any more and left. I don't
think I'll go back to the trial because I personally
have had enough of Hagglemax. I just don't care to
listen to him anymore. So that's my report for the
day.
Hopefully ACR will make arrangements with
"Reporter" to have her court reports for Justice
Watch also posted here.
