Okay, I got some work done in my yard yesterday, so I

decided to head back to the trial once again on my bike.

Today the weather was warm and sunny so I decided to

wear shorts. I didn't know if shorts are allowed inside the

courtroom, so I packed my jeans and long sleeved polo shirt

with a collar into my back pack and headed out. I got there

just in time as Arndt was seated in the witness chair just a

little while after I got there. She was being questioned by

 her own lawyer.

Basically he as asking her about her loss of income and

other expenses she had that related to her stress disorder

as a result of what happened in the Ramsey case. Some

press article had described Arndt as the "Mark Furman" of

the Ramsey case, and she said that was the worst insult

you could give a cop. I said to myself, "well it's not all bad,

because Furman was a very good cop. Again Hagglemax was

complaining about the "lack of foundation" for certain

evidence. I think it was the list of Arndt's expenses so there

was a very long recess. I had a chance to visit with Frank

 Coffman out in the hall.

He looked very spiffy in a handsome western style white

shirt. I complemented him on his nice appearance. He

chatted a bit and I told him how I have been critical of the

way the BDP handled the communications with the public

from the beginning. I said that for reasons of public safety,

the police had an obligation to keep the public better

informed. He made the argument that it was better for the

investigation for the police to remain silent. We both agreed

that there just isn't enough evidence in this case for a

conviction. At any rate, we waited around for the

proceedings to recommence but most everyone was out of

the court room. Sometime a little before 12:00 noon Mr.

Jones, Linda Arndt's attorney came in and I went up front

and ask him when the trial would begin again, and he said

1:30 so it was obviously time for lunch. Before that, a tall

and attractive well dressed blond woman had been seated in

front of "reporter" and myself. I had felt that she was most

likely Hagglemax's wife. She was with two young adult

persons that I suspected were her children. The young

woman bore a striking resemblance to Hagglemax so I

 presumed she was his daughter.

I think "reporter" agreed. Reporter was making small talk

with her about the lighting in the courtroom, and I joined in.

I found her to be amazingly personable for what I suspect is

a very "high maintenance" woman. She was warm and

friendly, and the three of us chatted about how lucky it is

that we are just observers, and not actually on the jury. I

said that I liked the freedom to get up and walk around in

the hallway during the sidebars and she agreed that the

freedom is nice, and not something that the jury is free to

 enjoy.

Reporter and I then headed off to Taco Bell for lunch, and I

pointed out to her that we were talking to Hagglemax's wife,

as reporter had not yet made the connection.

After lunch the trial began at 2:00. The judge stated it

would run until 5:00 and would start earlier tomorrow

morning and run until 6:00 PM. This didn't make some in the

crowd happy. I suspect he is punishing the attorneys for

their failure to "stipulate" to evidence before trial.

The afternoon session was devoted to the cross

examination of Arndt. She is a very good witness. She is

very careful and deliberate with her answers. She is very

well spoken and has a good choice of words.

Hagglemax droned on in his usual fashion trying to put words

into the witness's mouth. I thought Linda was the best

witness so far in dealing with Hagglemax's ambiguous and

confusing questioning. She would often state that she didn't

understand the question and asked him to repeat it. He

went off on a tangent and was dwelling on the first

sentence the the letter Judge Jackson had written to the

BPD. I think his style is to endlessly badger a witness hoping

to beat down the witness and bring about confusion. At one

point he made some one of his many claims and Arndt told

him, "that's a bold face lie and you know it." He grumped

that "we will get to that later." I noticed that all the women

on the jury were on the edge of their seats and they didn't

look all that happy. Here is poor Linda who has already been

worked over by the BPD and the media, and he's tearing her

down again. People began walking out of the court room one

by one, and I noticed the jury was watching the people

walk out. I myself grew tired of Hagglemax and decided to

leave too. I can only hope that the jury feels like me and

awards Linda a big settlement for all the hardship she has

suffered while just trying to do a good job as an honest cop

with the often criticized BPD and its often misreported

 Ramsey case.
